The Needlemaker of Cheapside - Mug & Coaster Set

£12.99

This set celebrates the skilled craftspeople of Tudor London's most important commercial street. In the 16th century, Cheapside was the heart of London's needle-making trade, supplying essential tools to the textile industry across England and beyond. The needle-makers' craft required precision and expertise - these were trained artisans whose products were sold internationally.

The design represents the Black presence amongst London's craft and merchant communities, individuals documented in Tudor parish records, port books and guild accounts. While we cannot name every Black craftsperson in Cheapside's workshops, the archival evidence confirms their presence in London's commercial life. This set honours that documented reality, bringing visibility to contributors whose race has often been edited out of popular Tudor narratives.

Set includes:

  • One 11oz ceramic mug, dishwasher and microwave safe

  • One cork-backed coaster with heat-resistant surface, 9cm x 9cm

Both pieces feature the same illustration in complementary teal and green tones. The caption "My Trade Secrets Stay With Me!" references the guilds' protection of craft knowledge and techniques. Ideal for teachers, students or anyone interested in Tudor history and Black British history. Your purchase supports Hidden Tudors Tours' educational work with London schools and councils.
